Medical Services - Cervical cancer vaccination

HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) - Gardasil®

Gardasil protects against the sub-types of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which can cause cancer of the cervix and genital warts.

HPV viruses 16 and 18 cause 75% of all cancers of the cervix.

HPV is sexually transmitted, therefore it is best administered to young girls or women before they have been sexually active. It is licensed for girls and women aged 9-26 years old.

The vaccination schedule consists of three injections given over a 6 month period:

  • Dose 1 - at your chosen date
  • Dose 2 - Two months after first dose
  • Dose 3 - Six months after first dose

It is not known as yet whether a booster will be required.

The government has introduced a similar vaccine for the UK immunisation schedule. This is called Cervarix ®. It protects against sub-types 16 and 18. Cervarix is offered in some schools. At this practice we administer the Gardasil vaccine which protects against sub-types 6, 11, 16 & 18.
